Dear Julie, Cleaning out your closet requires a willingness to be ruthless. My friends and I have dubbed the activity “Cutthroat Island”! The rule is if you haven’t worn it in over a year you must get rid of it.

January is the perfect time for a closet purge. Once you’ve made space both physically and mentally you’ll find new inspiration in building up a closet of things you’ll actually wear and will make you feel great. Some advice: Don’t feel bad about buying newer, updated versions of the basics you love and may already have in some form. Are you a striped tee girl? Try one in a new color combination. Do you wear pencil skirts? Update with a rugged, tie waist version. Here are three outfit ideas grounded in a few great closet workhorses that will take you through the year.
